Reader Beware - A Song of Ice and Fire

I am now on the fourth of five books in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. And who, at this point, does not know that this series is the basis for the HBO hit, Game of Thrones?  Well, if anybody is considering investing the significant time it takes to read even one of these installments, I have a bit of advice for you.  Let me first say that Martin adeptly blends the genres of fantasy, horror and adventure with good old-fashioned literary fiction ://www.writing-world.com/fiction/literary.shtml , and he does so better than any other writer of whom I am aware.  These books are definitely good reads but they are not for the faint-of-heart.

The story of  several ruling families living in a fictional land during medieval-like times, the tale is replete with beheadings, hangings and flayings-and that is the mild stuff.  As a writer, Martin takes no prisoners.  If you
are a fan of happy endings, these books are not for you. Additionally, if you have a tendency to get
emotionally attached to well-drawn characters that are often sympathetic in spite of their flawed humanity,
beware.  The Internet has exploded on more than one occasion with the ire of a reader betrayed by a
shocking and unexpected, some might even say sadistic, plot twist.  But if you like a story that is fantastical
and epic, but also manages to denounce the dark side of human nature, read on.
